Ninth grader tastes success when judges devour fair entries

TAMPA -- (Beth) began cooking at age 4 when her mother taught her how to make strawberry preserves. Since then, Brown has taught herself to make everything from pies, candies and cakes to breads and Thanksgiving dinner. Now others are getting a whiff of her talents.

(Beth), 15, a ninth grader in the Academy of Health Occupations at Tampa Bay Technical High School, won 29 ribbons in the Florida State Fair's Young American Baking Competition last month.
